Best Western Fieldwork

I chose the hotel fieldwork because I want to know the business English. I learned about it, but it is from the textbook, so I wanted to get a real opportunity to touch the English more and more. I thought the hotel work requires us to communicate with clients by face to face. And I thought that the hotel knowledge is valuable in the future. The hospitality is required in the tourism industry.

Oct12.13

My manager told me what my job is and how the front desk does. I could know the system of check-in and out. I was so nervous, so I asked them so many times. there are TRU students in Best Western. They are working as a part time job. One of the students tell me how to do it very easily.

Oct19.20

I did the front desk again. I practice the process of check in and check out. I am getting used to it so I could make time to talk with other co-workers. I tried to handle one client, but it is very difficult. Call came every time, but I hesitate to take it because I don’t know what I should talk. It is going to be a challenge for me.

I did the paperwork at this week and housekeeping at the first time. housekeeping is very physical work for me. A bed is very heavy. Housekeepers bring up the bed for the bed making. One of the managers bought the latte for the breaking time.

Nov2,3

the first day

We set up the meeting room at first time. The meeting room is used for the company’s conference, so we had to adjust the style like clients want. And, it is first day of snow, snow came suddenly. I was working the front staff. We can see the mountains from closed window. The mountain was covered by snow. When we go back home, there are lots of snow on the road.

 This week, we did the same thing with last week so I finish quickly because we know what we should do. That was the first time to take a call. It is very difficult for me because I can’t understand what they say to me. I felt I still need to practice more times. Face to face communication is very easy. I get more friendly with my manager of the front staff because it expanded what I can do in the front staff.

 We did the housekeeping and cleaned the meeting room up. I met the new person who can’t speak English well, but I can talk with her so much. She tried to talk with me. I thought I should response her.  I used the gestures.

Nov23.24

 We moved 85 TVs to the up floor because all tv are getting bad. When it arrived, they are covered with five TV by plastic wrap together. There is not an enough space to put the all TV at one place so we separated them to three different places. This week is last week of our fieldwork. It is going to be sad.

This was the good chance to practice English very well. The co-workers are very kind and friendly. They are interested in Japanese culture. I could talk with many co-workers and clients in Best Western. Some of them are TRU students. They are learning other things, so I was fun to talk about that. Many foreigners came to this hotel, so it is a time to learn other accents in countries. It is also a time to get knowledge of the hotel industry. Zeeshan, one of my managers tell me about tax and so on. the manager of the front desk told me what I should be more careful like assigning the room, task of the front staff. How to handle the clients, take a call, system of the computer and hospitality. It took time to be used to working in the hotel. There are still many things I must learn. However, I felt comfortable because that is the best place for me. I wanted to work there more.
